MIDLAND – A Midland football program is stepping up its game to keep its athletes safe.
Midland Christian football players have started wearing a special sleeve over their helmets.
The sleeves are called Guardian Caps. Coaches and even players say it’s keeping them in the game and off the sidelines.
The plays are getting bigger and the hits are getting harder, meaning football players are putting a lot on the line when they step onto the field. That’s why Midland Christian head football coach Greg McClendon isn’t taking any chances.
“Over the years as we’ve learned more and more about concussions, it’s really showing to be more repetitive hits that have the most impact,” coach McClendon said.
This year all varsity and JV football players are wearing Guardian Caps over their helmets during practice.
“It gives you some extra padding on the outside. It’s very light weight,” coach McClendon said. “If it keeps one player from getting a concussion and the long term effects of it, it’s worth the cost of all 80.”
Players say they’ve noticed a difference.
“These just add on to our chances to play the full season instead of having a chance of going down in practice,” senior football player Jacob Tucker said. “This year is different. I don’t go home with a headache every day.”
Coach McClendon says if it keeps his players healthy and in the game, it’s a win-win for everyone.
